22 February 2024, Islamabad – With funding from the US Embassy’s Office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), the Government of Balochistan is committed to enabling efficient delivery of the rule of law reforms, harnessing a new paradigm in protecting the rights of the province’s marginalized and vulnerable citizens.
Efficient coordination between police and prosecution is crucial for implementing such reforms and ensuring prompt, unbiased, and gender-sensitive investigations, especially in cases involving disadvantaged and underprivileged segments of society.
Funded by the INL, a comprehensive training program on enhancing cooperation between police and prosecution was inaugurated by UNODC with a first round of introductory sessions that took place from February 19-21, 2024 in Islamabad, in collaboration with the Government of Balochistan. A cross-section of investigation officers, representing Balochistan Police, and prosecutors from the Balochistan Prosecution Department proactively shared experiences and put forth valuable recommendations on how to strengthen collaborative synergies between the two key pillars of the justice sector—police and prosecution—across the chain of the investigation process right from the time of the filing of the FIR to carrying out the investigation until the presentation of the case to the court for fair and transparent delivery of trials.
Discussions revolved around contextualizing localized challenges and fostering mutual understanding between police and prosecution on how to address the underlying gaps in efficient investigation through regular cooperation, consultation, and the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The emphasis was placed on establishing an institutionalized mechanism to ensure the effective delivery of the rule of law at all levels in Balochistan.
The inaugural training provided a phenomenal opportunity for sharing insights and poised to have a transformative impact on justice delivery in the region. The commitment of the participants and the collaborative efforts between UNODC, the INL, and local authorities in Balochistan reflect a shared dedication to creating a safer and more just society for the people of Balochistan.
As this initiative unfolds through meticulously designed training modules, it is indeed a crucial step forward in strengthening justice and upholding the rule of law in Balochistan.
